One of the major myths regarding playing game titles for pay is that it is all fun and very little work. You get to plop down, get comfortable, play great new video game titles, and be able to collect a big fat check after you're done. Such a thing would truly be an excellent career; but unfortunately, it's not the way it is for professional beta game testers. Rather than playing a video game for fun -- be it on an xbox 360, playstation 3, Wii, or even a PC -- you will be "testing & evaluating" different games as part of a task.

You read that right, professional video game testers aren't given a huge amount money to have loads of fun & enjoyment playing the latest and greatest gaming titles -- they're paid to test and evaluate the newest video game titles for developers.

The most standard reaction to the above is "what's the difference between playing a video-game and testing one?" Well, its rather simple really. When you play video-games, you explore & "beat" a level and move on to the one after. When you are in charge of TESTING a game, you'll explore & conquer an area and then RESTART that level and play through it again. You don't repeat this once, twice, or even three times. You do this far more times than you'd think possible until you've uncovered all the glitches & bugs inside of that area. This may lead to grinding out a particular part of a video-game a dozen or more times to make certain that you have found all possible errors. Does that sound as if it's going to be a "exciting job" to you? I'm going to go out on a ledge and say NO!

Try not to get the wrong impression. Paid video game testers can and do have plenty of fun performing their job -- it's just that the fun isn't near the amount a lot of people believe it is. Rather than drinking cola, eating tons of pizza, and spending time with buddies playing great video-games, beta testers are actually working and trying to make video games more fun for the millions of waiting gamers out there.
