I've always loved going to the flea market. Open-air flea markets are my favorite, but I like all different types. It looks like my fascination goes back to when I was a child. We used to beg my mom to get to go to this one flea market downtown. You see, there was mechanical horse that you could ride for only a penny! My mom and father would give us 20 cents each and let's go at it til we got bored. Then we would wander around, looking at antique jewelry, old photographs, strange arts & crafts, and all varieties of other diverse goods like plus size coats. We would never look at anything practical '" that was what my mom and father were there for. For us, fleamarkets were an exercise in the extravagance of our imaginations. We would try to think of weird things we could search for & try and find them. Not ordinary things like plus size coats, but really distinctive items. Even though we rarely found what we were searching for, generally there was some-thing great that surprised us.

As I've gotten older, I have seen a more practical use for The fleamarket. For children, flea markets are a place to run wild, & exotic and old-time fair specializing only in rare and sought-after treasures, but for an adult they are some-thing different: locations to get quality goods like plus size coats at discount costs. Regrettably, all of the flea markets around here stink. To be honest, I haven't seen a good open-air market since I moved to this part of Tennessee. You'd think that such a rural community would have antique stores, discount markets, & other locations where people could exchange used goods & make a tad of money off their second hands, but apparently the trend has escaped this specific county.

To some degree, the Internet has helped to make up for the lack of flea market in the area. If I wish to find discount electronics, cheap cookware, or even remaindered clothes, I can get it on eBay or one of many other websites selling inexpensive wares. Nonetheless, I still miss the flea market. Purchasing online, you have less options. You are always taking a big risk if you buy something used, because you cannot look at it. Chiefly, you're limited to knock offs, generic reproductions, & the like. Nothing beats being able to barter face to face with some-one, evaluating the strengths & shortcomings of a product.
