Linda and Frank have been dating one another for eight-and-a-half years. They met while enrolled in the same Greek philosophy class at a small, rural, private liberal arts college located in the Eastern part of the United States. While they were for the most part good buddies at first, they finally started dating when they were in their second year of college.

Since both of them came from very conservative backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the casual drinking stage when they first began dating. As the time went by, then again, they started to go to more football bashes, sorority and fraternity parties, happy hours, and keg parties. As a consequence, they over time began to drink more as they proceeded in their relationship.

After they graduated from college, they both landed jobs in a small city that was located roughly fifty-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they decided to move in with one another.

With any important transformation in an individual's life there is usually something that sets off the specific modification in question. For Frank and Linda the notion of having children and buying a new house was this "source of change." Stated simply, for the first time in their lives, Frank and Linda started to critically appraise their irresponsible drinking and the long term negative consequences of alcohol on their lives. All of these queries unmistakably led to the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to get a more complete picture of the fact that they couldn't maintain their heavy and irresponsible drinking if their aspirations, hopes, and dreams were to be met.

Once they arrived at this conclusion, they told their drinking buddies about their their plans to start a family, about their marital plans, and about their goal of buying or building a new house. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to hang out with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this moment forward so that they could start to realize their future dreams, goals, and aspirations.

Unexpectedly, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been mulling over their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too often centered around drinking. They also understood that they would have to change notably if they were to become more accountable and manifest more consideration for their goals, their careers, and for their health in the next ten or fifteen years.

After their candid discussion with their pals about their aspirations, goals, and dreams, Frank and Linda in essence started to have more significant relationships with all of their pals. The main reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar mentality regarding their abusive and excessive drinking and their relatively short and long-term aspirations, plans, and goals.
