A Physical Education And Health Teacher Instructs Her Students About The Relevant Issues Involved In Alcohol Addiction Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest co-ed high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only two or three years, she had already established a reputation as a teacher with a teaching approach that inspired and motivated pupils to think and to learn.
For example, one Thursday morning she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific point of view."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely validate that a drinker with a drinking problem is a person who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a person manifests, the greater the likelihood that he or she is an alcohol dependent person."
Miss Jackson then informed the class that each pupil would be responsible for investigating two alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the class by way of a twenty minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to go over the list and rank the top five alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told her students that after she evaluates the numbers, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked her students to go over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within a minute or two, virtually every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was evident that the students had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, almost every individual in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, specifically, "Do you feel exceedingly ill when you refrain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told the students in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut sign of alcohol dependency. She pointed out that the most important difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when a person who is alcohol dependent suddenly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to grasp the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had motivated and stimulated the students in her class to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
